OUR HISTORY
1950s: Where we come from…
James E. Clark Sr., considered one of the founding fathers of 1911 gunsmithing, opens Clark Custom Guns in Shreveport, LA. Clark Custom Guns quickly became known for guns that win, being built by shooters that win. There is no mistaking the real deal. Innovations and techniques still used today were developed in the Clark shop over the years. James Clark Sr. is responsible for the creation of some of the most iconic 1911 innovations, such as the ramped 1911 barrel, the six-inch long slide, threaded cone compensators, and machine checkering on the front strap, to name a few.
1970: The Second Generation

2000: The Third Generation
In 2004, at the age of 18, Ben Hayes began his training at Clark Custom Guns. Under the leadership of his Uncle, Jim Clark Jr., Ben quickly became the head 1911 builder for Clark and continues the family tradition of crafting some of the finest 1911 pistols available.
Standing on the shoulders of some of the most respected gunsmiths in the world, Ben continues to refine his style and hone his craft, blending modern refinement with the soul of traditional gunsmithing.
2012: Hayes Custom Guns is Created
In 2012, Hayes Custom Guns was born. Brothers Aaron and Ben Hayes started building and modifying rifles, shotguns, and pistols under their own name. The love of 3-gun competition played a major role in shaping the company’s direction. Following in the family tradition of competitive shooting and keeping true to the adage that iron sharpens iron, Aaron and Ben drew on real-world competitive experience to create a brand synonymous with true craftsmanship and performance at the highest level.
2023: Enter the Cobra
In 2023, we decided to create a new pistol. The goal was to maintain the same build quality and performance our custom pistols have always been known for, while producing a larger number of guns. The idea was simple. Keep the quality and craftsmanship, and design one of the best all-around pistols available. The Cobra was born!
